Seniors have their share of problems and many go through life without a sympathetic listener to help during troubled times. Loss of a loved one, or a sudden change in health conditions or lifestyle, could become issues of concern. Trained counsellors and clergy might be available to provide professional support, however, there are times when those in a similar situation, can offer encouragement and an opportunity to simply talk things over, with someone in the same age group.
Senior Support Volunteers offer such a service, free of charge, as non-professional peer “counsellors”. This community support team can help individuals get more in touch with their own feelings and gain another perspective, for any given situation.
SIRC is seeking volunteer candidates who are mature and non-judgmental with strong listening, interpersonal and communications skills. Seniors Serving Seniors will deliver complete training to our volunteers on communication, self-awareness, values and ethics, and more, prior to receiving a client.
Training will take place over 12 weeks, beginning on Tuesday, September 12th from 9:30am to 12:30pm in Victoria. If you would like to learn more about becoming a Senior Support Volunteer, call SIRC at 250-278-5150 or visit www.seniorsservingseniors.bc.ca.
